Your hair transplant, 6 months in: Key tips for stronger hair

True change never goes unnoticed. 6 months in after your hair transplant, how many people have asked you what you did to look and feel better?

It might sound superficial, but actually, waking up in the morning and stroking your hair where there didn’t use to be any is an amazing feeling.

Noticeable results

For many, the change is undeniable. A quick browse through YouTube testimonials will show you countless happy faces with a full head of hair.

Transplants have gone up by 50 to 60%. Bravo! By now, you are probably encountering your fair share of skeptics, who, now that they have witnessed your results, are starting to look into where they can get the same procedure.

Of course, if your case is different, and you are feeling a little disappointed because you are not seeing the results you expected, do not despair, there is still a long way to go. Remember that definitive results appear only 12 to 14 months after your procedure. So, be patient, please!

Also remember that hair growth is not uniform. While hair grows faster in some areas -like the front of your head-, it can take much longer in other parts, like the crown.

Rock your hair in style

Meanwhile, if you take a look at the donor site, you will see that your scalp has healed by around 80%. It does not hurt anymore, and sensibility is back to normal. If you go to a barbershop, your barber will barely see any traces of your procedure.

Remember that, once you have your 3-month follow-up evaluation, you have no more restrictions:

  • You can do your regular workouts
  • Swimming in pools, the beach, steam baths, and saunas
  • Cutting your hair with scissors or clippers
  • Styling your hair with gel (always with the proper hygiene)

And we added one more to the list:

  • After six months, you can start using hair dyes and bleach

One of the main recommendations we give our patients at Kaloni is to keep a journal where they can upload photos every week, so they can see the progress for themselves. However, this record is no substitute for the medical evaluation, so it is important that you go to every one of your check-ups at the clinic, following the necessary hygiene and health protocols.

If you have not done it yet,

What to expect from your appointment

The medical expert will perform a physical exploration to determine whether your transplant is progressing correctly. It is important to update your file, so you can come back months later and see your progress at the clinic.

Also, remember to prevent and/or address any issue that could result in dermatitis (scalp irritation) or folliculitis (follicles that get trapped, so the hair does not reach the surface).

At this exploration, you might notice that your hair may need more nutrients.

Nutrients for native hair

Previously, we talked about how telogen effluvium usually occurs between the first and the third month after your procedure due to the stimulation of the transplanted follicles and the stress inflicted on your scalp.

To help you understand this better, here is how growth phases work:

  • Hair grows for 2 to 6 years.
  • Then, the follicle reaches a resting period of 15 to 30 days.
  • The hair falls out during a period of 3 to 6 months.
  • Finally, the hair’s growth cycle begins again.

This means that, when the effluvium is over and a new cycle begins, it is important to provide the necessary nutrients, so that both your native and your transplanted hair will grow healthy and strong.

In these cases, we highly recommend treatments like PRP (plasma-rich platelets), mesotherapy, or bio-stimulation.

These treatments nourish your scalp with amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients and growth factors, which fosters blood vessel formation and the correct functioning of your follicles. This prevents hair loss, makes your hair thicker, and gives your hair a fuller and healthier appearance.

For patients who use Minoxidil or Finasteride, we recommend that you talk to your doctor about how to use them correctly and how often.

Now, if you are looking for an immediate effect that enhances your results and creates the illusion that your hair is 100% back, you could wear some “follicle makeup,” which is what capillary fibers are usually called. They create the illusion of thicker hair in only a few seconds. However, keep in mind that this product is only temporary (meaning: you use it, and you take it off, just like makeup), and it requires appropriate hygiene.

A second procedure

Whenever we get something that we really like, we always want more. Six months after your procedure, you might start thinking about the possibility of getting a second transplant done in a different part of your head.

Throughout our long history of performing hair transplants, we have helped all kinds of patients.

Some of our patients are very aware of their situation and choose to gain more density in a smaller area, even if that means sacrificing the hairline a little (in other words, more hair per square centimeter), so that their results after only one procedure are completely satisfactory.

Meanwhile, there are also other patients who want to work on their hairline first and, depending on their results, they might talk to their doctor about the possibility of getting a second procedure in order to fill in any patches and increase density.

Important:  If you are thinking of getting a second procedure to fill in the same area that you treated with the previous procedure, you will have to wait for at least one year before being able to do so.

Which factors does this depend on?

Later, we will talk in depth about the factors that must be taken into account before performing a second procedure.

For now, suffice to say, it all depends on your degree of alopecia, hair density in the donor site, the number of transplanted follicles, and even the patient’s age and expectations for the future.

We cannot stress enough that every case is different.
