Trends in hair transplant: Can long hair be implanted?

We know that alopecia is a condition that affects almost half of the population from the age of 30 and that with age this problem becomes more evident. Therefore, it is more and more frequent to find different solutions to control hair loss and reduce the effects of baldness.

We have already talked about some techniques, such as hair cloning, which are in the research phase to put a definitive end to alopecia.

However, in 2020 the king par excellence in effective techniques against baldness is still the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant method, but with some improved details that I will tell you about next.

The most innovative techniques in hair transplantation

Let’s remember a bit how the FUE hair transplant technique works: first the follicular units are extracted, one by one, from the donor area, using a specialized instrument called a punch. Then the follicles are placed in the area to be treated with another instrument called an implant.

To perform this procedure it is usually necessary to shave the head since very short hair facilitates extraction and implantation.

However, experts in hair transplants globally have developed specialized instruments with features that facilitate the transplant without shaving the hair. Such is the case of Trivellini Technology, which I will tell you about soon.

How is the transplant performed with long hair?

The transplant with long hair allows the transfer of the follicles together with the hair shaft, maintaining an approximate length of up to 5 cm. Sounds simple, right? With certain instruments and the necessary skill of the surgeon, it is.

The process for transplanting long hair is essentially the same as the FUE technique. The difference lies in two fundamental aspects:

  1. The instruments used for the extraction: It is a punch and an implanter that have a lateral opening where the long hair is inserted to facilitate the extraction and placement of the follicles without the stem getting tangled with the rest of the hair.
  2. The doctors’ expertise: This procedure involves a much more detailed and careful work since it requires a very precise vision of the doctor to extract only the necessary follicular units, without affecting the surrounding hair in the donor area.

Advantages

Performing a long hair transplant sounds more appealing to patients because they don’t need to shave or change their look, and the signs of having undergone a procedure are minimal:

  • Scars from the donor area are hidden under the long hair around the extractions.
  • Patients can see right away what long hair looks like right where there used to be alopecia.
  • The day after the implant, other people will notice that it has a greater density of hair, but they will not be able to see the scabs from the procedure with the naked eye.

Disadvantages

  • Definitely, for the staff involved in the procedure, this work is more tiring, as more time than usual is required to extract each of the follicular units.
  • Consequently, the number of transplanted follicles may be less than would normally be the case if the hair were shaved.
  • This could lead to the patient having to perform a second procedure to reach the desired density in the area to be treated.

Recovery and evolution of the implants

Regarding the care, recovery, and evolution of hair implants, we must say that they follow the same process of the FUE technique: Definitely yes, also the follicles implanted with long hair go through a stage of effluvium or shock loss: the hair shafts can be seen between the first and third month after implantation because the follicle passes from the anagen phase (growth) to the telogen phase (loss) to start again the life cycle of hair, and you can see again the hair grown at the end of a year, approximately.

Without a doubt, this will be one of the treatments that will be in trend in the next 5 years, and Kaloni promises to always remain at the forefront of hair restoration.
