Movember and No Shave November Promote Men’s Health

Have you heard of Movember? And how about No Shave November? Starting in November you will. Both foundations will be in the limelight all month as they campaign the world over to invite people to let their mustaches or beards grow. The idea is for those who join-in to experiment with their style, whether with a Dali mustache or a Che Guevara beard. The more striking the look, the better the men’s health conversations the growth will engender.

The campaigns’ objectives are to raise awareness and generate dialogue, especially about the importance of early prostate cancer detection. Each does so in its own way. Both continue to expand their reach by including other diseases that impact men’s health currently being researched and treated by other world organizations.

First let’s talk about Movember

It began in Australia in 2003. The founders, Travis Garone and Luke Slaterry, were thinking about trying to bring mustaches back into style one day while talking in a bar in Melbourne, but they didn’t know exactly how. Nevertheless, their nostalgia gradually became an all-out effort to find 30 men willing to let their beard grows and they were successful.

And then what? Their proactive skill in generating dialogue inspired them and other participants to aim higher. So they created The Movember Foundation. The name comes from combining the words “mustache” and “November”.

From day one its purpose has been to promote conversations about prostate and testicular cancer, as well as about suicide prevention and mental health.

To this end, each year the foundation encourages men to grow a mustache and turn into a kind of walking billboard for men’s health.

Another important task in the movement is to collect funds for scientific research on prostate and testicular cancer. According to the official website, 800 scientific projects to date have been supported.

If you want to join in, remember to let your mustache grow from November 1st to the 30th. You can also visit the official website to get to know more about other causes the organization supports or to join the conversations on social networks. Upload your photo with a mustache, whether it’s real or fake, by using the hashtags #movember, #mobrother or #mosister, the names of the campaigns’ promoters.

Now it’s No Shave November’s turn

No Shave November has been active for several years but grew and spread the world over in 2009 when the Chicagoland Hill family decided to use November as an occasion to raise awareness about men’s health issues. The project has been dear to all eight sons in the family ever since their father, Matthew Hill, died of colon cancer in 2007.

No Shave November is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness about cancer and to fund-raising for its prevention through research and education.

Then how is No Shave November different? It encourages men to go one step further by growing a mustache and a beard.

The idea behind No Shave November is for men to donate all the money they would have spent on shaving to the American Cancer Society or another foundation dedicated to such research.

To join in all you have to do is stop shaving for 30 days and then find out more about the other causes the movement supports.

Starting conversations about men’s health

At the end of the day, both Movember and No Shave November foster dialogue highlighting issues concerning men’s health care.

Celebrities like Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and George Clooney have joined the movements to support their causes.

So you can see there are several welcome ways of joining in. From our Kaloni clinics we invite you to participate and take care of your health. Ask a specialist how you can prevent and detect prostate cancer right from the start.
