Health conditions that cause hair loss

Hair loss may be caused by various health conditions, which is why it is so important to detect these early on in order for the experts to determine the most suitable course of treatment.

The illnesses that cause alopecia, breakage, or thinning of the hair are many. Here we will talk about some of them:

Alopecia areata

It is a condition that causes hair loss as well as autoimmunity in the organism. The person’s own defenses attack the hair follicles. When white blood cells attack the hair follicles, it stops hair growth, which inevitably leads to hair loss. In general, alopecia areata attacks children and young adults mostly. Its origin is unknown, but it is surprisingly easy to identify because of the bald patches visible on the head. This hair loss can occur on eyebrows, facial hair, and eyelashes.

Lupus

This autoimmune disease requires some form of environmental catalyst to appear. For instance, it could be brought on by sun exposure, an infection, or hormonal disorders (like the sort that occur during pregnancy). Lupus harms various organs in the body, unleashing countless symptoms and causing fatigue, strong headaches and joint pain, anemia, hair loss, and abnormal clotting.

Diabetes mellitus 1 and 2

This condition is characterized by high blood sugar levels. Diabetes mellitus interacts with red blood cells, resulting in the synthesis of a composition called glycosylated hemoglobin. Then, this modified composition produces an alteration in red blood cells, making them more tense than usual, so that they get stuck between the walls of blood vessels. This is how vascular and circulatory problems originate.

When this happens, the capillaries that bring blood to the hair follicles weaken, leading to hair loss. In addition, when blood sugar levels get too high, the body might be at a higher risk of suffering bacterial or fungal infections that affect the scalp’s health by destroying the hair follicles.

Iron-deficiency anemia

Iron-deficiency anemia is characterized by a lack of sufficient red blood cells (hemoglobin). If your hair is falling out, or you believe that it is not growing as it should, it is recommended that you get blood tests done in order to determine your levels of ferritin and hemoglobin. A course of treatment based on an oral iron supplement would help the hair return to its normal growth rate.

Ringworm

Hair loss is a clear symptom of this ailment caused by Microsporum and Trichophyton, two different kinds of fungi. It usually presents itself in the form of grayish scales (not the usual color) on the scalp. The condition also tends to produce incredibly itchy bald spots. Because of this, follicles become extremely prone to falling out or breaking. The only way to treat this ailment is through antifungal medication meant to halt this infection. Therefore, it is fundamental that you talk to a professional about it.

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium is an alteration of the hair’s growth cycle. It is diagnosed based on an almost invisible form of hair loss, where an abnormal number of hair follicles advance too quickly to the telogen phase (the resting phase where hair does not grow) and do not fall out until after two months. There is no visible inflammation or reduction in the number of follicles. People who suffer from this condition only notice that they are losing hair when they shower or brush it. Telogen effluvium may be caused by a high fever, blood loss, surgery, trauma, shock, certain foods, crash diets, nutrient deficiency (proteins, iron, zinc, or vitamins), or endocrine system disorders.

Other health conditions that may also result in hair loss are sexually transmitted diseases like HIV or syphilis, which are known to cause this problem.

The list of health conditions that can cause hair loss is extremely long. The important thing is to go to a specialized hair clinic at the earliest signs of a problem in order to diagnose the exact ailment and offer you the most efficient course of treatment.
