How soon will I see my hair transplant’s results?

Alopecia is a problem that involves much more than just hair loss. People with alopecia suffer from low self-esteem and decreased confidence, which is why it is common for people who recur to hair transplants to expect results as soon as possible.

One of the most commonly reported concerns among people who undergo hair transplants is “shock loss” (telogen effluvium). Shock loss is what happens when hair transplant patients feel as though, instead of growing new hair, they actually start shedding more —and very quickly— after the procedure. However, this is only a temporary perception, and their hair starts growing naturally and permanently soon later.

How are follicles selected for a hair transplant?

The most advanced technique that will achieve the best hair transplant results is the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique. This method consists of a microsurgical procedure performed by a specialist who takes hair from one part of the patient’s head to another part of their head. The follicles are extracted by making small incisions on the scalp in follicular units, sections that contain one to three hairs. At Kaloni, we use the FUE technique because it allows us to select each follicle one by one. By doing so, we are then able to choose the best units, and thus provide the best transplant results.

How soon after will my hair look “normal”?

It is important to bear in mind that results are not immediate and that a hair transplant’s evolution is somewhat slow. Between the first and the third month after your hair transplant, the transplanted hair will go through a shedding phase. This phase, also known as the telogen phase, can be very frustrating for patients, naturally. Nevertheless, you should know that, despite this brief shedding phase, your follicles are still in your scalp, and they are working on growing new hair.

Your new hair will start growing after the fourth month. At first, it will look a little finer than the rest of your hair, but, over time, it will look thicker and more like what you are used to. In later months, you will enjoy the natural-looking results that you have been waiting for.

Will my new hair fall out?

The answer is no. There are two main reasons why transplanted hair will never fall out: first, you are your own donor, so your scalp will not reject the hair. Secondly, follicles are extracted from areas that are naturally resistant to DHT, the hormone that causes hair loss.

The best results are the work of the most qualified experts. Fortunately, at Kaloni, we have both a certified team with experience in small tissues, and also all the necessary equipment and infrastructure. Hair transplants can truly produce visually astounding results.

How should I care for my new hair?

There is still quite a lot of work to do after getting a hair transplant. It is recommended that you avoid direct sun exposure (15 minutes at the most) during the first three months post-procedure. It is also recommended that you be gentle when you touch the treatment area; this includes hat or cap use.

Hygiene is also a key aspect to keep in mind. Wash your hair very gently during the first few days, but start washing it a little bit more energetically after the second or third week in order to stimulate the recipient site. By this point, you will be able to stand under the showerhead and apply shampoo directly onto your head, depending on how much it hurts. At Kaloni, we will schedule your first follow-up consultation 10 days after your procedure. This way, our certified team will be able to advise you on how to wash your hair during that first month.

We do not recommend resuming your exercise routine immediately after your transplant. In fact, you should only incorporate some exercise gradually after the third-week mark. The first month is always the hardest because your follicles are only starting to get used to it, but you should be patient.

Still, the best thing you can do is keep a close eye on your progress month by month. After about a year, you will be pleased by the final results.

Will the clinic provide any treatment in addition to the hair transplant?

At Kaloni, we have over 20 years of experience, but our biggest endorsement comes from our patients, who vouch for the care and guidance that we provide after their hair transplants. We offer up to 14 months of continuous and personalized follow-up until they are then discharged. As part of this follow-up, we also offer various treatments that range from vitamin nourishment through capillary mesotherapy to capillary bio-stimulation, among others.

At Kaloni, we know that this is not just a hair transplant for you: your goal is to improve your quality of life by working on your appearance. Because of this, all of the cases we see are unique, and we study each one carefully in order to find the solution that suits their expectations the most.
