Tips for taking care of long hair

In Western cultures, it is rare to see men who wear their hair long. This is due, in part, to the fact that androgenetic alopecia makes hair in the front part of the head fall out. As a result, men try to camouflage these areas by cutting their hair uniformly to create an illusion of thickness. Another reason why many men do not grow their hair that much is because long hair is closely associated with femininity.

However, we have seen Hollywood actors such as Jared Leto, Orlando Bloom, and Ashton Kutcher rocking long hair on the big screen in recent years. And nowadays, it is increasingly common to see male beauty icons with long, even waist-length hair. Countless ads and publicity campaigns feature men with top knots and full beards. In today’s post, we will talk about what to do if you want to grow your hair long and how to take care of it.

The secret to long hair

The secret is simply being patient enough to let it grow. In general, your hair grows about 1 centimeter every month. If you do the math, you can get an idea of how long it would take to grow your hair to 30 centimeters long. However, trimming your ends is just as important if you want your hair to grow fast, strong, and healthy. Trimming your ends also helps prevent your strands from splitting all the way to the root, which would cause serious damage to your hair. Basically, trimming 2 centimeters off each time you go to the salon would save 15 centimeters of your hair in the long run.

Use a brush with natural bristles

Brushing long hair is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it is key to keeping your hair detangled, shiny, and healthy. It is extremely important that you use a hairbrush with natural bristles as well as a wide-tooth wooden comb; these tools will make detangling a lot easier on you and your hair.

You should always be gentle when brushing long hair, making sure that you avoid pulling at it, and brushing it only one section at a time.

For instance, by brushing from the roots to the middle of your strands will help detangle the knots created by your hair’s length. Or, it can slide the knots to the bottom part of your hair, where it will be easier to brush them out.

After you are done with the top half of your hair, you can brush from the middle to the ends. At this point, your brushing can be more energetic as you undo the knots that moved downward from the top half of your hair.

Shampoo and conditioner for long hair

Washing your hair with neutral shampoo is key to having healthy hair. However, after washing with the shampoo, you should use a conditioner, since this product will add shine to your hair and significantly help with detangling. Still, you should not overuse this hair product; three times a week is probably a good starting point. Also, you could try using a hair mask at least once a week; they help detangle the hair.
